Fees are rounded the way Clerestory rounds them: the platform fee up to the cent, processing to the nearest cent, and the covered total up, so the organization never comes out short.

How the math works

Why covering the fees costs a little more than the fees

Card processing and platform fees are charged on the amount the donor actually pays. So when a donor adds the fees to their gift, the fees grow with it.

  • The formula. Total the donor pays = (gift + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − processing rate − platform rate), rounded up to the cent.
  • On a $100 gift at Stripe's non-profit rate of 2.2% + $0.30 and a 3% platform fee: ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.948 = $105.81.
  • Check it. 3% of $105.81 is $3.18, and 2.2% of $105.81 plus $0.30 is $2.63. $105.81 − $3.18 − $2.63 = $100.00.
  • The shortcut is wrong. Adding the $5.50 of fees on $100 would leave the organization about $0.30 short, because the fees on the extra $5.50 are never paid.
  • Small gifts feel the fixed fee most. On a $10 gift the $0.30 alone is 3%, so covering the fees adds more than half a dollar.

Fee coverage, offered at checkout

Clerestory offers fee coverage as a checkbox at checkout on donations, memberships, dues, event tickets, classes and the gift shop, and calculates the amount with exactly the formula above.

  • It starts unticked. Covering the fees is the donor's choice, not a default they have to notice and undo.
  • Per dues tier. For club dues, fee coverage can be switched on or off for each tier.
  • What donors actually do. Across every payment processed on Clerestory through September 2026, 44% of people paying chose to cover the fees, which paid 41% of all processing fees.
  • What it costs. Clerestory charges 3% per successful transaction on your own Stripe account, plus Stripe's processing, with no subscription and no contract. Across every payment through August 2026, our customers' all-in cost was 3.148%.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the amount a donor needs to add to cover fees?

Divide the gift plus any fixed per-transaction fee by one minus the percentage fees. Because the fees are charged on the total the donor pays, not on the gift, simply adding the fee on a $100 gift is not enough. At Stripe's non-profit rate of 2.2% + $0.30 plus a 3% platform fee, a $100 gift needs a total of $105.81 for the organization to receive the full $100.

Why is covering fees on $100 more than $5.50?

Because the fees are charged on the covered amount too. The donor who covers the fees pays $105.81, and 3% of $105.81 is $3.18 while Stripe's 2.2% + $0.30 of it is $2.63, which together come to $5.81.

Do donors actually choose to cover fees?

Many do. Across every payment processed on Clerestory through September 2026, 44% of people paying chose to cover the fees, with a checkbox that starts unticked.

What processing rate should I use?

Use the rate on your own merchant account. Stripe's standard US card rate is 2.9% + $0.30, and eligible non-profits can apply to Stripe for a discounted rate; Clerestory customers with it pay 2.2% + $0.30. In-person card rates differ from online rates.

Does this calculator work for platforms other than Clerestory?

Yes. Set the platform fee to your platform's percentage, or to 0 if it charges none, and the processing rate to yours. Platforms round cents differently, so the result can differ from theirs by a cent.
